About AMD
Advanced Micro Devices, Inc., most commonly referred to as AMD, is an American multinational semiconductor company. In general, AMD’s main products include motherboard chipsets, microprocessors, graphic processors, Embedded Processors, and other electronics.
AMD was first established in 1969 by Jerry Sanders and seven colleagues from Fairchild Semiconductor, and their initial operations consisted of acting as a second source supplier of microchips for Fairchild and National Semiconductor. Around this time, AMD also began producing logic chips, and their parts were built in accordance to the United States Military Standard. In that same year, AMD also released the Am9300 shift register which acted as their first proprietary product.
Two years later, AMD entered the RAM chip market, and their sales quickly increased. A year later, AMD became a publicly traded company and continued to develop more powerful technology as their popularity rose. At this time, Intel and AMD began competing over the new microprocessor market, and they entered a cross-licensing agreement in 1976.
Leading into the 1980’s, AMD began to focus primarily on the microprocessor market, and their technology exchange agreement with Intel helped bolster their continued growth. In more recent years, AMD has focused on the acquisition of various electronic companies, as well as has restructured their divisions. Currently, AMD focuses primarily on microprocessors, as well as continues to develop various Electronic Components.
