About Samsung

Samsung is a South Korean multinational conglomerate based in Seoul, South Korea. The company comprises multiple affiliates and subsidiaries under the Samsung brand name. It is the largest South Korean business conglomerate in the world.

Originally founded as a trading company in 1938 by Lee Byunng-chul, Samsung dealt in grocery items and food. Throughout the 1930s, 40s, and 50s, Samsung diversified into insurance, securities, and retail, and in the 1960s, entered the electronics industry with the Samsung Electronics Devices, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, and Samsung Semiconductor and Telecommunications divisions. In 1980, Samsung acquired Hanguk Jeonja Tongsin based in Gumi and entered telecommunications hardware, with its first products being switchboards, and later expanding into telephones, fax machines, and mobile phone manufacturing. Since then, Samsung has produced over two billion Galaxy S smartphones.

In 1987, after the death of Lee Byung-chul, Samsung Group split into four different business groups: Samsung Group, Shinsegae Group (discount and department store), CJ Group (food, chemicals, entertainment, and logistics), and Hansol Group (paper and telecommunications). These groups are wholly independent of Samsung, and are not connected in any way. In total, Samsung comprises more than eighty companies and is highly diversified across multiple industries. • Engineering and Construction: Samsung Engineering was founded in 1969, and is headquartered in Seoul.
