About Teledyne
Teledyne Technologies Inc., an American industrial conglomerate, was founded in 1960 by Henry Singleton and George Kozmetsky through the acquisition of several pre-existing companies. Following a series of acquisitions via equity agreements, Teledyne continued to grow, expanding into markets such as microwave and consumer products, hydraulics, optics, and more. The company also began working with NASA and the Department of Defense, supplying the windows for the Apollo spacecraft, infrared optical domes for missiles, and later the Integrated Helicopter Avionics System for the US Navy. By the end of the 1960s, Teledyne had acquired more than ninety companies and offered a range of products from consumer goods to scientific equipment to defense technology. In 1969, Teledyne had accrued $2.7 billion in sales and a net income of $372 million.
In 1994, Teledyne experienced a hostile takeover attempt from WHX Corporation. The attempt was successfully challenged, but to avoid future conflicts, Teledyne merged with Allegheny Ludlum, a steel and specialty metal firm, to create Allegheny Teledyne Inc, or ATI. ATI operated within three segments: Aerospace and Electronics, Specialty Metals, and Consumer Products. In 1999, these segments were spun off into independent entities, creating Teledyne Technologies Incorporated, Allegheny Technologies Incorporated, and Water Pik Technologies Incorporated. Teledyne Technologies, or simply Teledyne, now operates in Thousand Oaks, California, in the greater Los Angeles area.
